Hey Trump Supporters: I Don’t Make Content For You

A frequent direct message (DM) I receive on Instagram is some version of this: “I come here for design posts and to see your life in France. Stop posting political stuff.”

My Instagram content is different than my Twitter content. On Twitter, where I have 112k followers (a fairly even mix of men and women), I mostly use the platform to amplify voices I appreciate. I end up retweeting a ton of political stuff, and some tweets that make me laugh. On Instagram, where I have 129k followers (90% women), I share more personal content like house renovations, vacations, and updates about my family. I share political thoughts sometimes on Instagram too — I regularly highlight tweets on Instagram Stories because I know the majority of my Instagram followers don’t use Twitter and are missing out on some excellent Twitter conversations — but politics is maybe 20% of my content on Instagram.

The DMs I receive, demanding I stop talking about politics, are without exception from vocal Trump supporters, or from people who claim to be independent, but based on their profiles, will very likely vote for Trump and are ashamed to admit it. My response to those DMs:
